Company warns against eating dried fish

The Ozean Fischgroßhandel GmbH from Ostercappeln in Lower Saxony has issued an urgent warning against the consumption of dried fish of the species "Roach without exception, crucian carp, river perch, trout, pike, all dried and salted". "It cannot be ruled out that eating the dried fish triggers the life-threatening poisoning botulism in humans," writes the company in a message published by the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety on its portal "Lebensmittelwarnung.de".

Botulism needs to be treated promptly

"Botulism is a life-threatening poisoning that can be caused by the consumption of spoiled meat or fish," explains the Lower Saxony Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection on its website.

“The trigger is the toxin botulinum toxin, which is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Botulism must be treated immediately in any case, otherwise it can lead to death, ”it continues.

The reason for the current warning is the illness of a patient in the Lippe district in whom the poison was detected in the blood.

The dried fish consumed by the patient, in which the pathogen was detected, comes from a supermarket that purchased the goods from Ozean GmbH.

However, it was not possible to determine in more detail what type of fish the affected patient ate. As a precautionary measure, the company therefore warns against the consumption of all dry fish that have been delivered to the market in which the patient has bought.
